How to improve health and safety at work.

The scope of your health and safety program depends on the size of your business and the dangers at your particular workplace. In general, a small business can establish its health and safety policy and describe its program in a few pages. For examples of health and safety plans, visit the WorksafeBC website.

Inspect your workplace
Regularly check all equipment and tools to make sure they are well maintained and safe for use. Also check storage areas and review safe work procedures. Are the boxes in your storage area stacked securely? Are your employees instructed how to lift heavy goods without injury? Do your employees know where the fire exit is and where they should meet if there is a fire safety?

Encourage training
Proper training in health and safety is necessary for all employees, especially if there is a risk of potential injuries at work. If you need to choose a Health and Safety Representative (HSR), you must have training to be able to use specific powers.

Occupational health and safety interventions:

·        Prosecutions: research shows that trials only have a small deterrent effect and that they resonate more with large companies.
·        Guidance Material: Occupational health and safety regulators have developed guidance materials and substantial codes of practice. However, there is little evidence of its effectiveness in producing changes in behavior.
·        Security campaigns: campaigns are effective ways to improve security behavior, especially if they are combined with execution and education.

The benefits of implementing safety and health practices
A proactive approach not only helps build trust, but also promotes and improves communication.
  • ·        Improved product, process and service.
  • ·        Improves morale at work.
  • ·        Improvement of the recruitment and retention of employees.
  • ·        Better reputation, both internal and external.

Train your employees.
Proper training is necessary for all employees, especially if there is a risk of potential injuries associated with a job. Provide written instructions and safe work procedures so they can verify for themselves if they are unsure of a task or have forgotten part of their training. Supervise your employees to make sure they are using your training to do their job properly and safely.
